Event Consists of Seven 40 Minute Rounds

Deck Construction Rules:

  • Players choose a legendary creature as the "General" for their deck.
  • A deck may not use cards that contain colored mana symbols, other than those in the General's mana cost. (Example: If Phelddagrif (1 U,W,G) is your General, your deck may not use any card that contains either red or black mana symbols. Boros Guildmage, Talisman of Dominance and Watery Grave are not allowed.)
  • A deck may not generate mana outside it's general's mana cost. Anything which would generate mana of an illegal color generates colorless mana instead.
  • A deck must contain exactly 100 cards (no more, no less), including the General.
  • Sideboards are not used.
  • A deck may not contain two cards with the same English name, with the exception of basic lands.
  • EDH is played with the vintage cardpool. Cards are legal as of a set's release.

Gameplay Rules:

  • Generals are announced and placed in the command zone before shuffling at the start of the game. Being a General is not a characteristic of the card. It is a property of the card. "Generalness" cannot be copied or overwritten by continuous effects and does not change with control of the card.
  • If a player suffers 21 points of combat damage from a single General, they lose. This is an additional state based effect separate and specific to each General and each player. This damage cannot be healed or undone, even if the General is temporarily removed from play. Damage done by a General under someone else's control is still counted towards the 21 point limit for that General and defender.
  • Generals may be played from the command zone. Players must pay 2 as an additional cost for each time after the first that the general is played in this way.(Example: Phelddagrif will cost 1 U,W,G the first time it is played from the removed from game zone, 3 U,W,G the second time, 5 U,W,G the third time and so on.)
  • If a General would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner may place it in the command zone instead. This is a replacement effect. If that General's owner chooses to apply this effect, then the General never goes to the graveyard and will not trigger abilities on going to the graveyard.
  • Players begin the game with 40 life.
  • The first time a player takes a mulligan, he or she draws a new hand of seven cards rather than six cards. Subsequent hands decrease by one card as normal.
  • Generals are not subject to the "legend rule". If a General and a non-General creature with the same name are in play, only the non-General is put into the graveyard by state-based effects. If two or more players have the same General and both creatures are in play, neither creature is put into the graveyard.

Here is the multi-player rules that we will play by for the next event:

Normal EDH Deck construction rules apply!

*Players will play in "pods" from 4 to 6 players depending on the attendance level. Example: if 24 players are in attendance there will be 4 pods with 6 players in each pod.

*Rather than receiving points from a round win (ex: 1 vs 1 play) players will only receive points for kills they make. A kill is determined by who controls the card (creature, spell, etc...) that kills an opposing player. Example: If Player A casts Lighting Bolt which causes Player B's life total to become 0, Player A is awarded the kill. Even if another player did 39 points of damage to Player B they must control the card. Cards like Mortal Combat that read a player "wins the game" are considered to kill each other player.

*Points are based on the order in which the kill is obtained. The earlier the kill, the more points awarded. Example: if 24 players are in attendance then we will have 4 pods of 6 players. The first kill in each pod is then worth 3 points, the second 2 points, the third 2 points, the fourth 1 point and the fifth 1 point.

*Rounds will be played in the Swiss format so players with more points will play in pods with other players in their point range.

*There are NO points awarded for draws! Example: if you survive your pod but didn't get a kill, you get 0 points. There is no reward for trying to draw out a round or not getting mixed up in combat.

*There are NO points awarded for killing yourself! Example: If you cast a pact and can't pay the upkeep, you do NOT get kill points. This also does not count as a kill so it will not skip point levels for awarded kills that round. It should be noted that if the pod comes down to 1 on 1 play, a self kill will award kill points to the remaining player.

*Each round is 90 minutes of play. This gives us enough time to actually play out each round but not enough to waste time talking rather than playing. If a player is talking rather than taking their turn they will run the risk of having their turn skipped by the judge. Keep your turns running smoothly and you will have plenty of time as the game is being played.

*Four rounds of pod play will be done and the winner will be the player with the most points at the end of the fourth round. Accumulated points will be made public during each round so leaders can be seen (much like win/loss records are posted at every event).

One big difference between normal multi-player play that you will notice is that there is NO benefit to collaborating with another player to keep each other alive. If you help an opponent get kills, congratulations they will have points and you'll have none. There will arise, as in every multi-player format, a time that you will want to help out another player take down a leader at the table. This is completely normal and a small amount of politics will enter the game but keep in mind, you only get points for the kills you make.

With that in mind you should also make sure that your deck has a way to kill an opponent (or 2). For example, if you want to "deck" your opponent you must actually control the spell that makes them draw the card that kills them. If you wait until their turn and they draw, you don't get points for that kill as the draw actually kills them not your "mill" card(s). This goes the same for damage. If you do 39 points of damage to a player and someone else attacks them with a 1/1 to kill them, they get the points for the kill. Make sure your deck is capable of killing off an opponent to get the kill points.

As in any multi-player format you will also want to be wary of combo decks. There are combos, even in EDH, that allow a player to kill off multiple opponents in 1 turn. Counterspells still have their place in multi-player because of this so don't be afraid to play them. On the flip side, playing a deck like this makes you a very large target in a multi-player format. Be wary that combo-ing may get you a good deal of points if uninterrupted, but it also makes you a huge target for the rest of the event. You likely won't survive very long in future rounds.
